About the Belgium Cold Springs

Our Mission:  The preservation and protection of the life and property during fires, calamities or other emergencies as may occur within the Belgium Cold Springs Fire District or neighboring areas, when called by the proper authorities.

Fire Department Fire District

The Belgium Cold Springs Fire Department  is a 100% volunteer organization.

The Belgium Cold Springs Fire District is a political subdivision of the State of New York.

From these volunteers, a Board of Directors is elected to manage the executive side of the Department, and a Chief and others are elected to manage the firematic portion of the Department.

The District is managed by a five-member Board of Fire Commissioners.  Each Commissioner is elected by the public for a term of five years, with one commissioner's term expiring each year.  The position of Commissioner is not paid.

The Department mans two fire stations and operates a fire training facility in the Town of Lysander, Onondaga County, New York.

The Fire Commissioners maintain a place of business at Fire Station 1 in the Town of Lysander, Onondaga County, New York.

The Department is responsible for providing fire, rescue and emergency services to the Fire District.

The Commissioners are charged with providing the necessary apparatus, buildings and equipment needed to assist the Fire Department in the protection of life and property within the District.

The Department and the Chief submit an annual firematic budget to the Commissioners for their consideration.

The Commissioners are empowered to raise taxes in order to supply the funds required to protect the District.

In order to pay for non-firematic expenses, the Department raises money through fund drives and various organized public events, including an annual pancake breakfast.

While the Fire District's budget is not voted on by the voters in the District, the Commissioners are mandated by State laws to follow a strict formula in preparing the budget. This process includes a spending limitation.

The Fire Department holds regular meetings open to members of the Department.

The Commissioners hold meetings open to the public on the third Monday of each month.

Fire Department elections are open to the members only and are held in December.

The Board of Fire Commissioners election is in December, and all registered voters of the District are eligible to vote.
