Firefighter I Training - 2008
The Town of Lysander Public Safety Fire Training Division recently conducted a New York State Firefighter I Training Program that concluded with a graduation ceremony on Wednesday, March 26th. Members from the Baldwinsville, Belgium-Cold Springs, Cody, Lakeside, Lysander, Phoenix and Warners Fire Departments participated in the program with Onondaga County Fire Instructors Tony McIntyre, Tom Perkins, Paul Becker, Jay Woodruff, Tim Wolsey and Mike Pitts presenting the program. Also, assisting with the instruction throughout the program was John Delahunt and Jeff Buck.

This course consisted of 112 hours of instruction in the following subject areas based on National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Firefighter I standards and the Thomson Delmar Learning Fire Training curriculum:

    • OSHA Firefighter Safety
    • Basic & Intermediate Firefighter Skills 
    • Air Mask Confidence & Firefighter Survival Skills
    • Incident Management System
    • MAYDAY and Firefighter Rehab Protocols
    • Initial Company Operations
    • Critical Incident Stress Debriefings
    • Hazardous Materials First Responder Operations
    • Weapons of Mass Destruction Awareness
    • Confined Space Rescue Awareness
    • First Aid / CPR / AED

Students are required to pass both written and practical skills examinations in order to successfully complete the course and receive New York State Firefighter certification.

Baldwinsville firefighter Joseph Marturano received the class valedictorian award and Phoenix firefighter Nicole VanDyke received the class salutatorian award both for academic excellence and achievement.
