Firefighter I Training - 2007
The Town of Lysander Public Safety Fire Training Division recently conducted the New York State Scene Support Operations and Firefighter I Training courses that concluded with a graduation ceremony for those firefighters that completed the program. Members from the Baldwinsville, Belgium-Cold Springs, Cody, Lysander, Phoenix and Plainville Fire Departments participated with Onondaga County Fire Instructors Paul Becker, Dave Donhauser, Tony McIntyre, Mike Pitts, Tim Wolsey and Jay Woodruff presenting the program.

The Scene Support Operations course consisted of 30 hours of instruction in the following subject areas based on National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards and the International Fire Service Training Association (IFSTA) training curriculum:

o       Basic Firefighter Skills for Exterior Operations 

o       OSHA Firefighter Safety

o       First Aid / CPR / AED

o       Critical Incident Stress Debriefings

o       Incident Management System

o       Firefighter Rehab and MAYDAY protocols

The Firefighter 1 course consisted of 84 hours of instruction in the following subject areas based on National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Firefighter I standards and the International Fire Service Training Association (IFSTA) training curriculum:

    • Basic & Intermediate Firefighter Skills 
    • OSHA Firefighter Safety
    • First Aid / CPR / AED
    • Critical Incident Stress Debriefings
    • Confined Space Awareness
    • Hazardous Materials First Responder Operations
    • Weapons of Mass Destruction Awareness
    • Incident Management System
    • Air Mask Confidence & Firefighter Survival Skills
    • Firefighter Rehab and MAYDAY protocols  

Students are required to pass both written and practical skills examination in order to successfully complete the course and receive New York State Firefighter certification.

Plainville firefighter Patrick O’Connell received the class valedictorian award. Belgium-Cold Springs firefighter Amy Speach and Cody firefighter Brian Holder received the class salutatorian award both for academic excellence and achievement.
